We landed in Beijing about 4:40am local time with a connecting flight that didn't leave until 10:30. In short, we just wondered around aimlessly to take up the time.
The flight and subsequent trip to the hotel was relatively uneventful.
After settling in we headed out for dinner. Our hotel is in a congested area between a shopping mall and a tourist attraction. Yesterday being Sunday, there was a ton of folks out and about. Here's a few tidbits:
- We are like a circus train when we're on the move. Everybody stares. This was expected but it's still funny. The Chinese don't observe the same social norms as us when it comes to pointing, staring, etc...
- Our bed in the hotels is quite possibly the firmest bed I've ever encountered. Once I started thinking of it as camping (i.e. sleeping on the ground) it seemed more adventurous and I slept better.
- Nobody here speaks English accept some of the staff at the hotel front desk. This gave me occasion to bust out my Chinese. To everybodys surprise (mine included) I managed to get us dinner and directions to the grocery store (kinda).
- Everybody loves Scott. Not only is he a baby but has blond hair and blue eyes. Two girls at the Beijing Airport thought it was hilarious that he had such a round belly. This is the scene in our hotel lobby on our way out for dinner. These girls chased us down so they could see Scott.
Today (Monday the 15th) we get Mae. Our appointment is at 2:00pm (midnight U.S. central time). Today is a big day!
